How to Be the Best Wedding Guest Ever | Sunshine Coast Celebrant Tips

As a celebrant and musician on the Sunshine Coast, I’ve seen my fair share of wedding magic and maybe a few awkward moments too. Whether you’re there for the vows or the dance floor, there are a few simple ways you can be the kind of guest who helps make the day even more memorable (for all the right reasons!). Read my blog “How to Be the Best Wedding Guest Ever | Sunshine Coast Celebrant Tips” to get some hot tips!

Arrive on Time (or Early!)

There’s nothing like the sound of heels clacking mid-ceremony or someone sneaking into their seat during the vows. Arriving 15 to 20 minutes early is the sweet spot. Quiet often couples will make this clear on their invitation, but sometimes they forget!

Being on time for the couple, means you’re settled and ready to soak it all in.

Respect the ‘Unplugged’ Ceremony

If the couple asks for an unplugged ceremony, they mean it. Let the photographer capture the special moments and keep your phone tucked away. Not only is it more respectful, but it also lets you be fully present and enjoy being in the ceremony.

Know the Dress Code

Wearing white to a wedding (unless specifically told to) is a big no no. But beyond that, pay attention to the dress code. If it’s cocktail, beach chic, or formal — lean into it! Dressing appropriately shows you care.

Don’t bring uninvited guests

Don’t bring a plus one unless your invitation says you can, and you have in fact RSVP’d that they will be accompanying you. Never assume kids are welcome unless it’s clearly stated. This could make for a really uncomfortable situation for both you and the couple.

Celebrate Without Taking Over

Be generous with your claps, cheers, and happy tears — but don’t upstage the couple. This isn’t your performance moment (unless you’re invited to speak or perform!).

Use Your Inside Voice (Especially During the Ceremony)

Weddings can be emotional and exciting but keep conversations to a whisper during the ceremony, if you do feel the need to talk, especially if there’s music or readings happening. Remember: everyone can hear everything.

Be Mindful of Photos and Social Media

There’s usually a quick housekeeping note at the start of the ceremony (which I often deliver!) about photography and social sharing. Respect it. Don’t post before the couple, and definitely don’t block the pro photographer’s shot.

Some photographers get creative if you do, think pineapples or chickens in hand. You’ve been warned!

Don’t Overindulge

Enjoy the food and drinks, but know your limits. Being the “fun guest” doesn’t mean being the drunkest one. You don’t want to be the story people remember for the wrong reasons.

Listen and Engage

Ceremony, speeches, performances all deserve your attention. If you’re chatting or glued to your phone, we notice. (Yes, I see you playing Candy Crush in the second row.)

If you’re not keen to be present, maybe someone else would love your seat more!

Respect Boundaries and Timings

Stick to the schedule and respect the couple’s space and their vendors. If it’s time to move on to canapés, don’t wander off to start your own photo shoot. Following the flow means you won’t miss key moments likes starters or the speeches!

Bring the Good Vibes

This one’s the easiest, smile, dance, mingle, and be kind. Weddings are a celebration of love, and good energy is the BEST gift you can bring…

Don’t Hijack the Microphone

Unless you have been invited to speak, don’t assume you can make a speech. Unplanned speeches can throw off the schedule or embarrass the couple. The last thing they want is a Dutch courage inspired speech. Ekk!

Final Thought:

The best wedding guests are the ones who add to the joy, stay present, and leave the couple feeling loved and supported. Follow these tips “How to Be the Best Wedding Guest Ever | Sunshine Coast Celebrant Tips” and be that guest.

I guarantee you’ll be remembered for all the right reasons by the couples, the vendors and even the lady behind the mic.

See you on the dance floor!
